Fertilizing Pothos for Beginners: Simple Tips That Work
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Alright, let’s talk about fertilizing them pothos plants, you know, the ones that hang pretty in your house. I ain’t no fancy expert, but I’ve kept these things alive for a good while, so I reckon I know a thing or two.

First off, you gotta understand these plants need food, just like us. They can’t just live off air, can they? You gotta give ’em somethin’ to grow big and strong. That’s where the fertilizer comes in. Don’t go gettin’ all flustered thinkin’ it’s complicated, it ain’t rocket science, I tell ya.

Now, there’s all sorts of fertilizers out there, lots of them. You got the stuff you mix with water, the stuff that looks like little pellets, and even some powders. I mostly use the kind you mix with water, seems easiest to me. Just follow the directions on the package, they’ll tell ya how much to use. Don’t go dumpin’ a whole bunch in there thinkin’ it’ll make ’em grow faster, you’ll just burn the roots, and then you’ll have nothin’ but dead leaves. And nobody wants that, right?

I usually feed my pothos every few weeks, maybe two or three, somethin’ like that. If they’re growin’ like crazy, I might do it a bit more often, if they’re just sittin’ there, I might wait a little longer. You gotta kinda get a feel for it, see what your plants need. They’ll tell ya, if you pay attention. Droopy leaves, yellow leaves, that ain’t good. Means they’re hungry or somethin’ ain’t right.

  • Water-soluble fertilizer: Mix it with water and pour it on the soil. Easy peasy.
  • Granular fertilizer: Sprinkle it on top of the soil, like you’re feedin’ chickens.
  • Powdered fertilizer: Mix it with water or sprinkle it on, same as the others.

Temperature is important too, you know. Pothos like it warm, not too hot, not too cold. Like in your house, you know? And they like light, but not too much direct sun. Just a nice bright spot, that’s all they need. If they ain’t gettin’ enough light, they’ll get all stretchy and leggy, and that ain’t pretty. You want them leaves nice and full, right?

Now, if you got your pothos growin’ in just water, you still gotta feed ’em. Can’t just let ’em sit there in plain water and expect ’em to thrive. I usually give ’em a little fertilizer every month or so, maybe every six weeks. Again, follow the directions on the package, don’t just guess. And don’t use too much, you’ll make the water all cloudy and nasty. You can adjust the feed for the pothos’ size, bigger ones need a bit more, smaller ones need less. Makes sense, right?

Some folks talk about all them fancy fertilizer numbers, like 20-20-20 or somethin’. Honestly, I don’t pay much attention to that stuff. I just get a good all-purpose fertilizer and that seems to do the trick. Ain’t no need to get all scientific about it, unless you want to. I just want my plants healthy, looking nice and green, that’s it.

There’s also this thing they call top dressing. That’s just puttin’ the fertilizer right on the top of the soil. I do that sometimes, if I’m feelin’ lazy and don’t wanna mix up the water. Just sprinkle a little on top and water it in. Works just fine.

And don’t go overpotting them plants, ya hear? They like to be a little snug in their pots. If you put ’em in a pot that’s too big, the soil stays wet too long and the roots can rot. Then you’ll have a whole other set of problems. Just give ’em a pot that’s a little bigger than their root ball and they’ll be happy.

Fertilizing Pothos for Beginners: Simple Tips That Work

So, there you have it. My simple way of fertilizing pothos. Ain’t nothin’ fancy, just plain common sense, really. Feed ’em regular, give ’em some light and warmth, and they’ll grow like weeds. And that’s what we want, ain’t it? Big, beautiful pothos, hangin’ all over the place, makin’ the house look nice. Now go on and take care of your plants, they deserve it.

And remember, read them labels. Don’t just go throwin’ stuff in there Willy-Nilly. That’s a surefire way to kill ‘em. And no one wants that, do they?

Fertilizing is important, yes, but so is just paying attention. Look at your plants, see how they are doing. They’ll tell you what they need. You just gotta listen. That’s all there is to it. Now go on and get to it.

One last thing, don’t believe everything you read on the internet. Lots of folks out there trying to sell you stuff you don’t need. Just keep it simple, that’s what I say.
