Okay, so I’ve been wanting to add a bit of color to my indoor space, and I heard about this thing called a Polka Dot Plant. Apparently, it’s got these cool, spotted leaves. Sounded right up my alley, so I decided to give it a shot.
First off, I went to a local nursery. I asked around and finally found these little guys. They had all sorts of colors, but I picked out one with bright pink spots. I mean, who can resist pink, right?

I brought it home and then realized I had no idea what kind of pot or soil to use. So, I did a quick search online. Turns out, they like well-draining soil. I had some regular potting mix and perlite, so I mixed those together. Seemed to do the trick.
For the pot, I just used an old ceramic one I had lying around. Made sure it had a drainage hole at the bottom, though. Don’t want my new plant buddy to get soggy feet!
Getting the plant into the pot was a bit of a mess, ngl. I tried to be gentle, but some soil still ended up on the floor. Anyway, I managed to get it in, watered it, and placed it on a windowsill that gets a good amount of indirect light.
Next thing was figuring out how often to water it. I read somewhere that these plants like their soil to be a little moist, but not soaking wet. So, for the past few weeks, I’ve been checking the soil with my finger, and if it feels dry about an inch down, I give it a good drink.
My Observations
- Noticed that if I forget to water it, the leaves start to droop. Kind of dramatic, but hey, it’s a good reminder!
- Also saw some new leaves sprouting. They’re so tiny and cute!
- The pink color seems to be staying pretty vibrant, which is awesome.
Honestly, I’m pretty stoked about how it’s turning out. I even named it “Dotty”. Cheesy, I know, but I like it. And taking care of Dotty is getting easy! It’s been a fun little project, and my room definitely looks a lot brighter now. If you’re thinking of getting a plant, I’d say give the Polka Dot Plant a try. They’re pretty easygoing, as long as you don’t let them dry out too much.
I’ll probably try to get another one in a different color soon. Maybe red or white. We’ll see!
