Alright, let me tell you about this cylinder planter with stand project I tackled. It was a fun one, and I learned a few things along the way.
So, it all started because my wife wanted a new planter for the patio. You know how it is, always something! She showed me a picture of this sleek, modern cylinder planter with a wooden stand and said, “Can you make that?” Of course, I said yes! I mean, how hard could it be, right?

First thing was figuring out the cylinder itself. I decided to use concrete. I’d messed around with concrete before, so I wasn’t a complete newbie. I grabbed some quick-setting concrete mix from the hardware store. For the mold, I used a large cardboard concrete form tube that I cut to the height I wanted. I also used a smaller bucket inside the cardboard tube to create the hollow center for the plants.
Mixing the concrete was the messy part. I followed the instructions on the bag, adding water until it was a good, thick consistency. I poured it into the mold, making sure to vibrate it a bit to get rid of any air bubbles. Then, I carefully placed the smaller bucket inside to create the hollow space. I weighed down the bucket with some rocks to keep it from floating up.
Now came the waiting game. I let the concrete cure for a couple of days, keeping it damp by spraying it with water a few times. This helps the concrete to not crack. Finally, the moment of truth! I carefully removed the cardboard mold and the inner bucket. It actually came out pretty good! There were a few minor imperfections, but nothing major. I sanded them down a bit to smooth things out.
Next up was the wooden stand. I wanted something simple but sturdy. I used some scrap pine lumber I had lying around in the garage. I cut four legs at a slight angle and then joined them together with some cross pieces. I used wood glue and screws to make sure it was solid. After sanding everything down, I stained it a dark walnut color to match the patio furniture.
Putting the planter and stand together was the final step. I just set the concrete cylinder on top of the wooden stand. It fit perfectly! The wife was thrilled with the result. We planted some succulents in it, and it looks great on the patio. It was a cool project, and it really added something to our outdoor space. Plus, I get points for being a handy husband, so win-win! It wasn’t too hard, but it did require a little bit of patience and some good old-fashioned elbow grease.
