Okay, so I’ve been messing around with some terracotta pots lately, trying to spice up my little balcony garden. Here’s the lowdown on what I did – nothing fancy, just a simple terracotta pot on a stand.
The Idea: I had this plain terracotta pot lying around and thought it looked kinda sad on the ground. Plus, my back was killing me bending over to water my plants. So, a stand seemed like the perfect solution.

Finding a Stand: This was the trickiest part. I didn’t want to spend a fortune, so I hit up a few local thrift stores and eventually stumbled upon a cool little metal plant stand at a flea market. It was a bit rusty, but nothing a little elbow grease couldn’t fix.
Cleaning & Prep: First things first, I scrubbed the stand down with some soapy water to get rid of all the grime. Then, I used some sandpaper to smooth out the rough patches and get rid of the loose rust. After that, I gave it a quick coat of rust-resistant spray paint – black, because it goes with everything. Let it dry completely, obviously.
Potting Time: I already had my plant ready to go – a cute little succulent. I made sure the terracotta pot had good drainage holes (added some gravel at the bottom just in case), filled it with some well-draining potting mix, and gently nestled the succulent in. Gave it a good watering, letting the excess drain out.
The Big Reveal: Carefully lifted the terracotta pot and placed it onto the plant stand. Boom! Instant upgrade. It looked way more intentional and stylish than just sitting on the floor. Plus, it was now at a much more comfortable height for watering and admiring.
A Few Tweaks: I wasn’t totally happy with the bare terracotta, so I thought about painting it. But then I decided to keep it simple and just tied a bit of twine around the top for a rustic touch. You could also paint it, decoupage it, or even add some mosaic tiles for a more personalized look. That’s a project for another day, though.
Lessons Learned:
- Thrift stores are your best friend for finding cheap plant stands.
- Don’t skip the prep work – cleaning and painting the stand makes a huge difference.
- Terracotta pots are super versatile and can be easily customized.
- Raising your plants off the ground just makes them look better, trust me.
Final Thoughts: It’s a small thing, but it really elevated the look of my balcony garden. And my back is thanking me! Give it a try – you might be surprised how much a simple terracotta pot on a stand can change things up.
