Recently, I got into growing coleus plants. These things are so cool with their bright colors and patterns. I thought, “Why not try growing them inside?” So, that’s what I did, and let me tell you, it’s been quite a ride.
First off, I went and got a few different kinds of coleus. I made sure they were healthy, no droopy leaves or anything. Then, I grabbed some pots that I thought looked nice. Nothing too fancy, just your regular indoor plant pots with some holes in the bottom for drainage.

The first big thing I did was get these guys out of their little nursery pots. I took each plant out carefully, making sure not to mess up the roots too much. I shook off the old soil gently, just to check if there were any unwelcome guests like bugs or eggs hanging around the roots. Better safe than sorry, right?
- Repotting Time
I filled my new pots with some fresh potting mix. This stuff was good quality, the kind that holds moisture but doesn’t stay too wet. I placed each coleus in its new home and covered the roots with more soil, pressing it down a bit to make sure they were snug.
- Finding the Right Spot
Next, I looked for a good place for them. I’ve got this north-facing window that gets a decent amount of light, but it’s not directly in the sun all day. Coleus plants like it bright, but they don’t want to get scorched. I put them near this window, hoping they’d like it there. I also made sure the spot was warm, because I read they don’t like the cold.
- Keeping Them Happy
I watered them regularly, trying to keep the soil moist but not soggy. It’s a bit of a balancing act. I also noticed that the air in my apartment can get pretty dry, so I got a humidity tray. I just filled it with some pebbles and water and placed the pots on top. It seemed to make a difference.
Trimming and Talking
I noticed one of them was getting a bit leggy, so I pinched off some of the longer stems. This is supposed to make them bushier, which is what I wanted. And yeah, I did talk to them a little. I don’t know if it helps, but it makes me feel good. “You’re doing great, little buddy!” or “Looking good today!” That kind of thing.
So far, they’re doing pretty well. They’ve added a nice splash of color to my place, and I like having them around. It’s been a fun little project, and I’m learning as I go. I might get a few more and try some different varieties. Indoor gardening is pretty neat!
