Cheap Fertilizer Flow Meter Options. Are They Worth It?

So, I’ve been messing around with my farming setup, trying to get a better handle on how much fertilizer I’m actually using. You know, not wasting the stuff and making sure everything’s getting the right amount. That’s where this whole fertilizer flow meter thing came in.

Getting Started

First, I had to figure out what kind of flow meter I even needed. There are a bunch of different types, like those paddle wheel ones, and some fancier magnetic ones. I did some digging around, looked at what other folks were using, and decided to go with a turbine flow meter. Seemed like a good balance of price and accuracy for what I needed.

The Installation

Next up was actually putting the thing in. This wasn’t too bad, honestly. I just had to cut into my existing fertilizer line – make sure you shut everything off first! – and then clamp the flow meter in place. I used some thread sealant on all the connections to make sure there weren’t any leaks. A little bit of a messy job, but nothing too complicated.

Some point:

  • Turned off the main valve.
  • Cut the fertilizer line at a suitable point.
  • Inserted the turbine flow meter.
  • Tightened the clamps.
  • Applied sealant to prevent leaks.

Wiring It Up

Then came the wiring. My flow meter had a couple of wires that needed to be connected to my display unit. I’m no electrician, but the instructions were pretty clear. Just had to match up the right colors and screw them into the terminals. The display unit I chose also shows the flow rate and total volume, which is pretty neat.

Testing and Calibration

Once everything was hooked up, it was time to test it out. I ran some fertilizer through the system and watched the numbers on the display. At first, they seemed a little off. I thought I messed up. So, I did some calibration. Basically, I ran a known amount of fertilizer through and adjusted the settings on the display until it matched what I knew I had used. Took a few tries, but I got it dialed in pretty accurately.

Real-World Use

Now that it’s all set up, I can actually see how much fertilizer I’m using in real time. It’s been super helpful for making sure I’m not over-applying or under-applying. Plus, I can keep track of my total fertilizer usage over time, which is great for planning and budgeting. It shows the flow rate and total, which helps keep things consistent.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with how this whole fertilizer flow meter project turned out. It was a bit of work to get it all installed and calibrated, but it’s definitely going to save me some money and hassle in the long run. Definitely something to consider if you’re looking to get a bit more precise with your fertilizer application!
