Okay, so I’ve been meaning to get better at identifying plants, especially the flowering ones around here in Florida. It’s, like, super sunny all the time, so there are tons of flowers, and I figured I’d start with the yellow ones. It seemed like a manageable chunk, you know?
Getting Started
First, I just started walking around my neighborhood. I took my phone with me and snapped pictures of every yellow flower I could find. No fancy camera, just my regular phone camera. I figured I’d worry about the quality later. The important thing was to get a good variety of shots.

The Photo Taking Process
I made sure to get different angles – close-ups of the petals and leaves, and then a wider shot to show the whole plant and where it was growing. Sun, shade, near a sidewalk, in a garden… that kind of stuff. I didn’t really know what details would be important for identification, so I tried to capture everything.
The Hard Part: Identification
This is where things got tricky. I uploaded all my photos to my computer and started looking at them. Honestly, a lot of them looked kinda similar! I realized I needed some help.
I went through the photos and grouped * were easy such as sunflower.
What I Learned (So Far!)
- Taking good photos is key. Blurry pictures are basically useless for identification.
- Pay attention to details. Leaf shape, flower size, how the petals are arranged… it all matters.
- It will take time.I am going to finish idenfication.
It’s a work in progress, but it’s been fun! I definitely feel like I’m learning a lot, and it’s making my walks way more interesting.
