Well, let me tell ya, some plants, they just love that sunshine and wet dirt, just like me after a good rain! If you got a soggy yard, don’t you fret none. We gonna figure out what greens like to grow there. Some folks, they plant all sorts of fancy stuff, but I stick to what works.
First off, if you wanna eat somethin’ from your garden, leafy greens are your best bet. Stuff like lettuce, cabbage, and that there kale, they just love wet ground. Their roots ain’t deep, so they get thirsty fast if things dry up. I even had a good year with squash in my heavy clay soil, that thick mud that holds water like a sponge. And if you just wanna grow somethin’ simple, wheat or any kinda grass, that’ll do just fine too. They ain’t picky.

Now, if you want somethin’ pretty, somethin’ to look at, there’s plenty of those too. Everybody knows sunflowers, right? Big ol’ yellow faces, always lookin’ at the sun. They need lots of sun, least six hours a day, and they don’t mind wet feet neither. They come in different colors too, yellow, kinda reddish-brown, even white ones. Tough plants, those sunflowers.
- Canna lilies, those are somethin’ else. Big leaves, bright flowers, make your yard look like one of them fancy magazines. They like it wet, makes ‘em grow big and strong.
- And then there’s Black Chokeberry. It’s a bush, gets little berries. Birds love ‘em, and they ain’t bad lookin’ neither. Grows good in wet spots.
- Another one is Buttonbush. It likes to grow near water, like ditches or lakes. Got these funny lookin’ ball-shaped flowers.
You know, gardenin’ ain’t rocket science. You just gotta pick the right plants for the right spot. If water sits around in your yard, you can’t go plantin’ somethin’ that likes it dry. It’ll die, sure as the sun sets. So, you gotta find plants that like that wetness. That’s all there is to it.
But listen here, just ’cause a plant likes wet soil don’t mean it wants to swim all day. Standing water, that’s no good for most things. If water’s always sittin’ on top of the ground, not soakin’ in, you might have a bigger problem. You need to maybe dig a ditch or something to let that water run off. But if it’s just good, wet dirt, then these plants I told you about, they’ll be happy as clams.
And remember, sunshine is important too. Lots of folks think wet soil means shade, but that ain’t always true. You want full sun, that means the sun beatin’ down on the plants for most of the day. So find a spot that’s both sunny and wet, and you’ll be good to go.
Now, I ain’t got no fancy degrees in plant science or nothin’. I just know what I seen workin’ in my own garden for years. And I’m tellin’ you, if you got a wet, sunny spot, don’t go wastin’ it. Plant some of these greens and flowers, and you’ll have a pretty garden that thrives, no matter how much rain comes down. And that’s the truth, plain and simple.
So go on, get yourself some seeds or some little plants from the store, and get to diggin’. It ain’t hard work, and it’s good for the soul. And when you see them plants growin’ tall and strong, you’ll feel proud, just like I do every year when my garden comes to life. You just gotta give them plants what they like, that sun and that wet dirt, and they’ll do the rest. That’s the secret, if you can call it a secret. It’s just common sense, really.
