Okay, so I saw this super cute owl watering can online, and I just had to try and make one myself. I mean, who doesn’t need a ridiculously adorable watering can in their life?
Gathering My Stuff
First things first, I needed to gather some supplies. I already had some plain old terracotta pots and saucers at home (score!), so I just needed to grab a few extra things:
- Acrylic paints: I picked up yellow, black, white, and brown – gotta get those classic owl colors.
- Paintbrushes: A couple of different sizes, some for big areas and some for tiny details.
- Spray Sealer: I don’t need the paint work chip, so I must prepare a spary sealer.
- Something for the spout: Okay, this is where I got creative. I ended up using a plastic spoon. You’ll see.
- Glue: Super glue, because it had to be strong.
Painting the Base
I started by painting the whole pot and the saucer with a base coat of yellow. I did like two coats to make sure it was really bright and covered all the terracotta color. It looked a little crazy at this point, like a giant yellow blob, but I trusted the process.
Owl Time!
Now it is the owl time!
Once the yellow was totally dry, I started on the owl features. With black, I made two big circles on the front of the pot for eyes. Then I used white to paint smaller circles inside those for the pupils. It looked pretty derpy, I am not gonna lie, but it started resembling an owl.
- The “belly” area got some light brown feathery strokes.
- The “wing” and “tail” with the white and brown strokes too.
Making the Spout
Okay, the spout. This was the trickiest part. I took my plastic spoon (white, luckily), and cut off the handle. Then, I used my super glue to attach the spoon’s bowl part to the pot, right under the eyes, so it looked like a little beak/spout. It was a little janky, but hey, it worked!
Sealing the Deal
After all the paint was completely dry (I waited like a whole day, just to be safe), I took my owl outside and gave it a good couple of coats of spray sealer. This is super important so the paint doesn’t just wash away when you water your plants.
The Grand Finale
After the sealer, I put the saucer under the pot. And there it was, I created an owl watering can, although I am not an artist, the owl watering can looks great. Now I’ve got the cutest watering can ever, and it actually works! Total win.
