Okay, so I’ve been wanting to add some green to my place, but my apartment doesn’t get a ton of natural light. I did some digging and decided to try my hand at growing some low-maintenance indoor plants. Here’s how it went:
The Hunt for the Perfect Plants
First, I hit up a local nursery. I told the staff there that I was a total beginner and needed plants that could basically survive on neglect. They were super helpful!

They pointed me towards a few good options:
- Snake Plant (Sansevieria): Apparently, these things are almost indestructible.
- ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia): Another super tough one that can handle low light and infrequent watering.
- Pothos: These are pretty common, and for good reason – they’re easy to care for and can tolerate a range of conditions.
- Cast Iron Plant (Aspidistra elatior): Seriously, the name says it all!
Getting My Hands Dirty
I picked up a snake plant and a ZZ plant to start. I also grabbed some basic potting mix and a couple of pots with drainage holes (super important!).
Back home, I got down to business. I carefully removed the plants from their nursery pots and gently loosened the roots. Then, I placed them in their new pots, filled them with potting mix, and gave them a good watering. It felt good to get my hands a little dirty!
Finding the Right Spot
Now, the tricky part – finding a spot where these guys would get enough light, but not too much. I settled on a corner of my living room that gets indirect light from a north-facing window. It’s not bright, but hopefully, it’ll be enough.
The Waiting Game (and a Little Watering)
I read that the plants were good with neglect, and that overwatering was worse, so I watered them once and left them be.
A few weeks later, when I poked my finger into the soil, and it was dry, I watered them again.

Still Alive!
It’s been a couple of months now, and I’m happy to report that both plants are still alive and kicking! The snake plant has even sprouted a new leaf, which feels like a major victory. I’m definitely no expert, but I’m pretty proud of myself for keeping these guys alive. It just goes to show that even with low light, you can still enjoy a bit of greenery indoors!
