Are Self Watering Hanging Baskets Worth It? (The Lazy Gardeners Dream)

Alright, folks, gather ’round. Today, I’m gonna share a little project I’ve been tinkering with – self-watering hanging baskets. You know, for those of us who love a bit of greenery but ain’t always got the time to be watering plants every day.

Getting Started

First off, I grabbed some regular hanging baskets, the plastic kind you get from any garden store. Nothing fancy. Then, I needed a way to store water, so I repurposed some old plastic bottles. I chose the ones that fit nicely in the bottom of the baskets without taking up too much space.

Making the Reservoir

Next up, I took those plastic bottles and poked a few small holes in the caps. This is important – you don’t want too much water flowing out at once. Just a slow, steady drip. Once the caps were ready, I filled the bottles with water and screwed the caps back on tight.

Putting It Together

I placed the water-filled bottles upside down in the bottom of the baskets. Then, I added a layer of landscape fabric over the bottles. This acts as a barrier, preventing the soil from clogging up the bottle caps and allowing the water to wick up into the soil. You could also use an old t-shirt, or any water-absorbing fabric.

Adding the Plants

With the fabric in place, I filled the baskets with potting mix, leaving a bit of space at the top. Then came the fun part – planting! I picked out some of my favorite trailing plants, the kind that look great spilling over the edges of a hanging basket. Petunias, ivy, that sort of thing.

Final Touches

After getting the plants settled in, I gave them a good initial watering, just to make sure the soil was nice and damp. From then on, the water in the bottles would slowly seep into the soil, keeping it moist without overwatering. It’s like magic, but it’s just simple physics.

The Result

  • Less watering: I only have to refill the bottles every week or so, depending on the weather.
  • Happy plants: My plants seem to love it. They’re thriving, and I haven’t lost any to underwatering or overwatering.
  • Easy maintenance: It’s a set-it-and-forget-it system. Perfect for busy folks or those who are a bit forgetful when it comes to plant care.

So, there you have it. My DIY self-watering hanging baskets. It’s a simple, cheap, and effective way to keep your plants happy and hydrated. Give it a try, and let me know how it goes!
