Alright, so I’ve been getting into houseplants lately, and one that really caught my eye was the Alocasia. You know, those plants with the big, dramatic leaves? Yeah, those. I decided to get one and see if I could keep it alive indoors.
First thing I did was find a good spot for it. I read somewhere that they like bright, indirect light. So, I put it near a window, but not right in the direct sunbeams. I figured that’d be a good starting point. I also made sure the pot had drainage holes because I heard they don’t like sitting in water. Makes sense, right?

Next up, watering. This was a bit tricky. I didn’t want to overwater it, but I also didn’t want it to dry out completely. I ended up just sticking my finger in the soil every few days. If it felt dry about an inch down, I’d give it a good soak until water ran out the bottom. I also tried to use room-temperature water, ’cause I thought cold water might shock it or something.
- Find a good spot.
- Water it.
- Keep the humidity up.
- Fertilize it.
- Watch out for pests.
Then there was the humidity thing. Apparently, Alocasias like it humid. I don’t have a humidifier, so I just grouped it with some of my other plants. I also misted it a few times a week with a spray bottle. I don’t know if it made a huge difference, but it seemed happy enough.
I also started fertilizing it every month or so during the growing season. I just used a regular houseplant fertilizer, nothing fancy. I diluted it to half strength, though, just to be safe. I didn’t want to burn the roots or anything.
Now, I did run into a few snags along the way. At one point, some of the leaves started turning yellow and dropping off. I freaked out a bit, but then I realized I might have been overwatering it. So, I cut back on the watering, and it seemed to recover. I also noticed some tiny webs on the leaves at one point, and I figured it might be spider mites. I just wiped down the leaves with a damp cloth and kept an eye on it. They didn’t come back, thankfully.
My Alocasia
Overall, I’d say it’s been a pretty rewarding experience. It’s not the easiest plant to care for, but it’s definitely doable. And those leaves are just so cool to look at! It’s definitely added a nice touch of green to my apartment. I even gave it a name. It’s Gerald now. We are friends.
So, yeah, that’s my Alocasia care journey so far. It’s still alive and kicking, so I must be doing something right! If you’re thinking about getting one, I’d say go for it. Just be prepared to give it a little extra love and attention.
