Starting My Flower Hunt in Baytown
Last Thursday I needed anniversary flowers quick but didn’t wanna spend $100. Started driving around Baytown checking every spot I could find. First stopped at that fancy florist near City Hall – nearly choked when I saw $75 for twelve roses!
Grocery Store Surprise
Decided to try Kroger next. Walked past the veggies and boom! Their floral section had these premade bouquets for $12.99. Grabbed this yellow daisy mix with baby’s breath – looked way better than I expected for the price.

The Dollar Store Experiment
Got curious and hit Dollar General. Found single stems for $1.25 each! Grabbed seven carnations and some green filler. Total came to like $9. Went home, chopped the stems different lengths, stuck ’em in a mason jar. Looked artsy and homemade!
Gas Station Flowers? Seriously?
On my way home spotted that new Shell station. Saw buckets of flowers outside – looked sketchy but checked anyway. Found $10 mixed bouquets wrapped in plastic. Sniff test passed, no wilting! Bought one for my neighbor just to test quality.
Here’s how they stacked up:
- Grocery store bouquet: Easiest grab-and-go option
- DIY dollar store: Cheapest but takes 15 min prep
- Gas station surprise: Actually decent for last-minute panic buys
What Actually Worked
Turns out you don’t need fancy shops here in Baytown. My wife loved all three versions but guess which one lasted longest? The Kroger one made it 9 days! Dollar store carnations started drooping after 4 days. Gas station flowers looked good for about 6 days.
Next time I’ll skip florists completely unless it’s Valentine’s Day emergency. Who knew cheap flowers could look this good?
