My Little Fertilizer Spray Experiment

Okay, so I was looking at my flowers the other day, mostly the ones in pots on the patio. They seemed a bit… meh. You know? Not dying, but not really thriving either. I remembered reading somewhere about foliar feeding, basically spraying fertilizer right onto the leaves. Sounded interesting, and I figured, why not give it a shot? Didn’t want anything too complicated or store-bought fancy stuff.

So, I decided to make my own little concoction. Here’s what I did:

Is homemade flower fertilizer spray really effective? Discover simple recipes versus store bought options today.
  • Grabbed an old spray bottle: First thing, find a clean spray bottle. I had an empty one from some cleaning product, rinsed it out really, really well. Like, multiple times with hot water. Didn’t want any leftover chemicals messing things up.
  • Mixed some stuff up: I didn’t follow a strict recipe. I took some of that liquid seaweed fertilizer I had – just a tiny splash, maybe like half a capful into the bottle filled with water. It’s supposed to be gentle. I also chucked in a tiny bit of Epsom salt I had lying around, maybe half a teaspoon? Heard it’s good for magnesium. Stirred it all up, well, swished the bottle around.

Trying it Out

Next step was actually using it. I waited until the evening, like when the sun was going down. Read somewhere it’s better then, so the leaves don’t get scorched and have time to absorb stuff overnight. Makes sense.

I went out to the patio. Picked up the spray bottle. Gave it another good shake. Then, I just started spraying. I tried to get a light mist over the leaves, top and bottom if I could reach. Didn’t drench them, just a gentle coating. I did this for my petunias, geraniums, and that sad-looking fuchsia.

Watching and Waiting

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting miracles overnight. It’s just some slightly boosted water, right? But I kept an eye on them over the next week or so. Sprayed them maybe twice that first week, again in the evening.

What I noticed: Well, after about a week, maybe 10 days? The leaves did seem a bit greener, especially on the geraniums. The fuchsia, which was looking particularly droopy, seemed to perk up a little. It wasn’t like a massive transformation, but they definitely didn’t look worse, and maybe looked a tiny bit happier. No new blooms suddenly popped out or anything dramatic like that, but the existing foliage looked healthier.

So yeah, that was my little experiment. Pretty simple stuff. Just grabbed a bottle, mixed a bit of this and that, sprayed it on the plants. Seems like it gave them a little boost. I’ll probably do it again every now and then when they look like they need a little pick-me-up. Easy enough and didn’t cost much!
