Okay, so let’s talk about these Haws watering cans. For ages, I was just using whatever cheap plastic thing I could find. You know the type. They last maybe a season or two, then the handle snaps, or the plastic gets brittle and cracks, especially if you leave it out in the sun. Total waste of money over time.
I kept seeing pictures of these fancy-looking metal cans, the Haws ones. They looked kinda old-school, proper gardening kit. Heard people saying they last forever. I was skeptical, mostly because of the price tag. Not cheap, definitely not cheap.

Getting Fed Up and Taking the Plunge
Anyway, my third plastic can bit the dust mid-season last year. Just split right down the side when I filled it. Water everywhere. That was the final straw. I thought, right, I’m gonna try one of those Haws things. If it lasts, it might actually be cheaper in the long run.
So I went online, looked around. Decided on one of their classic-looking metal ones, I think it’s called the Professional or something? Picked a color, green, obviously. Placed the order. Felt a bit ridiculous spending that much on a watering can, honestly.
The Arrival and First Impressions
It arrived a few days later. Box was bigger than I expected. Pulled it out. First thing I noticed? The weight. It felt substantial. Not heavy like it’s annoying, but solid. Made of metal, maybe galvanized steel? Painted nicely. You could just feel it was built differently than the plastic junk.
- It had a good, strong handle on top.
- Another handle on the back for tipping.
- Came with a brass ‘rose’ – that sprinkler thingy on the end. It looked really well-made too.
Putting it to Work
Took it straight out to the tap. Filled it up. The opening is pretty wide, so filling is easy, no spills. Picked it up. The balance is surprisingly good, even when it’s full. Doesn’t feel like it’s trying to tip over on you like some cans do.
Carried it over to my seedlings. This was the real test. Tipped it up. And man, the water that came out of that brass rose… it was so fine and gentle. Like soft rain. Perfect for not blasting tiny plants out of their pots. It wasn’t a harsh jet, wasn’t big clumsy drops. Just a really nice, even shower.
Tried it without the rose too, just using the spout for bigger pots or getting right to the base of plants. Good controlled stream, easy to direct.
Living With It
Been using it constantly since then. Indoors for houseplants, outdoors in the garden. It just works. It does the job a watering can is supposed to do, but it does it really well. And it feels like it’ll keep doing it for years.

Things I’ve noticed:
- Don’t leave water sitting in it for ages, best to empty it after use, especially if you have hard water. Keeps it cleaner.
- The brass rose can sometimes get a bit clogged if your water has debris, but it unscrews easily for a quick clean.
- Yeah, it was more expensive upfront. No denying that.
But honestly? Compared to buying a new plastic can every year or two? This thing feels like an investment. It feels good to use, it waters my plants better, and I’m pretty confident I won’t be buying another watering can for a very, very long time. It just sits there looking kind of classy when I’m not using it too, which is a bonus. No regrets grabbing one.
