Okay, let’s talk about this little project I got myself into recently, thinking about fragrant purple flowers. It all started kinda randomly, I think I saw something, maybe an article or was it that crossword puzzle everyone talks about? The ‘nyt’ bit stuck in my head, anyway.
Getting Started
So, I started thinking, “What purple flowers are really fragrant?” My mind went to a few places. Lilacs, definitely. Grew up with those. Maybe some types of iris? But the one that really popped up was lavender. Everyone knows lavender, right? For sleep, for calming down, all that stuff.

I decided I wanted to experience it properly, not just buy some essential oil, but have the actual plant around. So, the first step was heading out to the local garden center. Found a couple of nice-looking lavender plants. Nothing too fancy, just the regular English lavender, I think.
The Experience
Got them home and potted them up. Put one on the windowsill in the kitchen and another out on the little balcony. Didn’t take long for the scent to start wafting around, especially when the sun hit them.
It’s quite something, that smell. It’s not overpowering, but it’s definitely there. Sweet, a bit herbal, maybe a tiny bit floral? It’s hard to pin down exactly. I remember reading somewhere that the smell comes from specific things inside the plant’s oils. What were they called? Linalool, maybe? And linalyl acetate? Sounds complicated, but basically, that’s the sciencey bit behind why it smells so nice and, well, relaxing.
Here’s what I noticed just having them around:
- The kitchen felt a bit fresher.
- Sitting out on the balcony in the evening was nicer with that scent drifting by.
- Just brushing past the leaves releases another little burst of fragrance.
It wasn’t a huge life-changing thing, obviously. But it was a simple, nice experience. Just focusing on something natural, enjoying the scent. It reminded me that sometimes the simple things, like a plant that smells good, are pretty great. It was a good little practical thing to do, starting from that random thought about “fragrant purple flowers nyt” and ending up with actual lavender scenting up my place.
