Okay, so I’m gonna walk you through this little project I did the other day – a flowerpot light. It’s pretty simple, but I think it turned out pretty cool.
First things first, the idea. I saw something similar online, but it was way too expensive. I thought, “Hey, I can totally make that myself!” Plus, I had a bunch of spare stuff lying around.

So, I grabbed a terracotta flowerpot from the garage. It was just a regular one, nothing fancy. I think it was like, five bucks at the hardware store originally. Then, I rummaged through my junk drawer and found an old LED puck light. You know, the kind you stick under kitchen cabinets? Perfect.
Next, I needed to make a hole in the bottom of the flowerpot. This was probably the trickiest part. I didn’t want to crack the terracotta. So, I taped a piece of cardboard over the spot where I wanted the hole, then carefully drilled a pilot hole with a small drill bit. After that, I used a larger hole saw bit to slowly widen the hole. Took my time, kept the drill speed low, and it worked like a charm!
Now for the fun part: assembly. I threaded the wire of the LED puck light through the hole I just made. The puck light had an adhesive backing, so I stuck it to the inside of the flowerpot, right at the top, facing down. That way, the light would shine out of the bottom.
To hide the wire, I grabbed some decorative gravel from my garden. I poured it into the flowerpot, filling it up to just below the puck light. This not only hid the wire, but it also added a bit of weight to the pot, making it more stable.
Almost done! Now, for the finishing touch. I wanted to give it a cool, diffused glow. So, I took some parchment paper and cut it into a circle slightly larger than the opening of the flowerpot. I crumpled the parchment paper up into a ball, then smoothed it out again. This gave it a nice, crinkled texture. Then, I taped the parchment paper circle over the opening of the flowerpot.
And that’s it! I plugged in the LED light, and boom! A beautiful, warm glow. It looks really cool sitting on my patio at night. I’m thinking of making a few more in different sizes and colors.

- LED Puck Light
- Drill with hole saw bit
- Decorative Gravel
- Parchment Paper
- Tape
Super easy, super cheap, and looks way more expensive than it actually is. Give it a try!
