Okay, so I’ve been wanting to add some green to my place, but I’m, like, the opposite of a green thumb. My apartment doesn’t get a ton of light either, so I needed plants that could handle that. I did some digging and decided to give it a shot. Here’s how it went:
The Hunt for the Perfect Plants
First, I hit up a local nursery. I told the lady there that I was a total newbie and needed something super low-maintenance. I also explained that my apartment is rather dim.

- She immediately suggested a Snake Plant. Apparently, those things are almost impossible to kill. They’re also called Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, which I thought was kind of funny.
- Then she showed me a ZZ Plant. Another tough one, she said. It can handle low light and doesn’t need a lot of water. Perfect!
- I also grabbed a Pothos. She said they’re pretty easy to care for and can tolerate low-light conditions, though they might grow a bit slower.
Getting Them Settled In
I picked up some basic potting mix and some simple pots—nothing fancy.
Back home, I carefully took each plant out of its original container. Gently loosened the roots a bit and then potted them into the new containers with the fresh soil.
I watered them until I saw water coming out of the drainage holes at the bottom.
Finding the Right Spots
Now for the placement. Since my apartment is a bit dark. I try to put them in strategic places.
- I put the Snake Plant in a corner that doesn’t get much light at all.
- The ZZ Plant went on a shelf that gets some indirect light.
- I hung the Pothos near a window, but not directly in the sunbeams. It’s more of a bright, indirect light situation.
Keeping Them Alive (Fingers Crossed!)
It’s been a few weeks now, and so far, so good! I’ve been watering them only when the soil feels dry to the touch. I’m trying really hard not to overwater, because I heard that’s a common mistake.
The Snake Plant and ZZ Plant seem to be doing great. They haven’t changed much, which I’m taking as a good sign. The Pothos has even put out a few new leaves! I’m feeling pretty proud of myself, not gonna lie. It’s amazing how a little bit of green can brighten up a space, even one that’s not blessed with tons of natural light.

I’m still a beginner, of course, but I’m learning. It is not that hard!
