Today, I got curious about something pretty basic in construction: shovels and picks. What exactly are they used for? I mean, I see them all the time on sites, but I figured it was time for a little hands-on investigation.
Digging into Shovels
First up, the shovel. I grabbed a regular old shovel from my garage – the kind you’d use for gardening. I figured, soil is soil, right?

- Scooping Loose Stuff: I started with a pile of dirt I had leftover from a recent landscaping project. The shovel was perfect! I could easily scoop up large amounts of dirt and move it around. I felt like a mini-excavator!
- Mixing Concrete (Sort Of): Okay, I didn’t have any actual concrete mix, but I pretended. I dumped some dirt and some gravel together, and the shovel was great for mixing them up. I could see how this would be useful for smaller concrete jobs where you don’t need a huge mixer.
- Spreading Material: I used the shovel to spread out some mulch around my plants. The broad, flat blade made it super easy to get an even layer. Way faster than doing it by hand, that’s for sure!
Picking Apart the Pick
Next, the pickaxe. Honestly, I was a little intimidated. This thing looks serious! I found a patch of hard, compacted ground in my backyard.
- Breaking Up Hard Ground: I swung the pickaxe (carefully!) and, wow, it really does break up the ground. I can imagine using this to get through rocky or clay-heavy soil that a shovel would just bounce off of.
- Creating Trenches:By dragging the pointy end of the pick, make a small trench, It was surprisingly easy to control the depth and width. I could see how this would be perfect for digging trenches for pipes or cables.
- Demolition (on a Small Scale):I don’t think I will use it, but I’ve seen videos online of people using pickaxes to break up old concrete or *’s pretty hardcore!
So, there you have it! My little experiment showed me that shovels and picks, while both digging tools, have very different strengths. Shovels are your go-to for moving and mixing loose material, while picks are the muscle for breaking up hard ground and digging trenches. It’s all about using the right tool for the job, I guess!
