Watering Can Planters: Creative Ideas & Where to Buy!

Okay, so I’ve been seeing these super cute watering can planters all over Pinterest and Instagram, and I finally decided to give it a shot myself. I mean, how hard could it be, right? Turns out, it’s pretty easy and a lot of fun!

Getting Started

First things first, I needed a watering can. I didn’t want to ruin a perfectly good one, so I headed to a local thrift store. Found this old, slightly rusty metal one for like five bucks – perfect! You could probably use a plastic one too, but I liked the vintage vibe of the metal.

Then I picked up some potting soil and a few of my favorite small plants. I went with some succulents because they’re pretty low-maintenance, and I’m not exactly known for my green thumb.

The Fun Part: Putting It All Together

  • I gave the watering can a good scrub, mostly to get rid of any dirt and dust. I didn’t bother trying to get rid of the rust, I thought it added character.
  • Next, I needed to make sure there was drainage. My watering can already had some small holes at the bottom of the spout, but they were pretty tiny.

Now, I filled the watering can with the potting soil, leaving a bit of space at the top. I used a towel put it in.

Adding the Plants

This is where it got a little messy, but in a good way! I carefully removed my succulents from their little pots and gently loosened the roots. Then, I arranged them in the watering can, making sure they had enough space to grow. I added a bit more soil around them to make sure they were nice and snug.

After I got the plants in, I used the spout to water them. I mean, it’s a watering can, gotta use the spout, right? It worked perfectly, gave the plants a nice gentle shower.

The Finished Product!

And that’s it! My very own watering can planter. I placed it on my porch, and it looks so charming. It’s a fun, quirky little addition to my outdoor space, and it was so easy to make. Honestly, I’m already thinking about making another one. Maybe I’ll try some colorful flowers next time!

It’s a super simple project, and it’s a great way to upcycle an old watering can and add a bit of personality to your garden or patio. Give it a try!
