Okay, here’s my blog post about my experience with flowerpot fungus:
So, the other day I noticed something weird in one of my flowerpots. It was this yellowish, kinda spongy-looking stuff growing on top of the soil. I was like, “What the heck is that?” I’d never seen anything like it before.

My Little Investigation
First thing I did was poke it with a stick. Seriously, that’s always my first move. It was soft and kinda crumbly. Definitely not a plant, and it didn’t smell like anything, really.
Next, I grabbed my phone and snapped some pictures. I figured I’d do some Googling later to try and figure out what this mystery stuff was.
After my very scientific stick-poking, I decided to carefully scoop some of the yellow stuff out. I didn’t want it spreading to my other plants, just in case it was something bad. I used an old spoon and dumped the stuff into a plastic baggie.
The Big Reveal
Later that night, I finally sat down at my computer and started my online search. I typed in things like “yellow stuff in flowerpot” and “weird growth on soil.” After a bit of scrolling, I finally found it! It’s called flowerpot fungus, or Leucocoprinus birnbaumii if you want to get fancy.
Turns out, it’s pretty common, especially in potting soil. From what I read, it’s not really harmful to the plants, but it can be a sign that the soil is staying too wet. It basically feeds on decaying organic matter in the soil.
What I Did About It
Even though it’s supposedly harmless, I still didn’t want it hanging around. So, here’s what I did:
- I removed as much of the visible fungus as I could. Like I said, old spoon and a baggie.
- I let the soil dry out a bit more between waterings. I’m usually pretty good about not overwatering, but I guess I’d been a little too generous lately.
- I am thinking to repotted the plant with some fresh * is my next step.
It’s been a couple of weeks now, and I haven’t seen any more of the yellow stuff. My plant seems happy, so I guess everything is okay. It was a bit of a weird experience, but hey, I learned something new! And now I know what to do if I ever see that flowerpot fungus again.
