Japanese Gardening Shovel vs. Trowel: What to Choose?

Okay, so I’ve been meaning to get my hands on a proper Japanese gardening shovel, a hori-hori, for a while now. I finally decided to take the plunge and get one, and let me tell you, it’s been a game-changer in my little backyard garden.

The Search Begins

First, I started by looking around online. I wanted something authentic, not just a cheap knock-off. I read a bunch of reviews and compared different brands and styles. It was a little overwhelming, to be honest, with all the options.

Japanese Gardening Shovel vs. Trowel: What to Choose?

Making the Choice

After a good bit of digging (pun intended!), I settled on one that seemed like a good balance of quality and price. It had a solid-looking blade, a comfortable handle, and plenty of positive reviews. I clicked “add to cart” and waited impatiently for it to arrive.

Unboxing and First Impressions

When the package finally showed up, I ripped it open like a kid on Christmas morning. The shovel felt sturdy and well-made. The blade was sharp (careful!), and the wooden handle felt smooth in my hand. I couldn’t wait to try it out.

Putting It to the Test

  • Weeding: This is where the hori-hori really shines. I went after some stubborn weeds that had been taunting me for weeks. The sharp, serrated edge sliced through the roots like butter.
  • Digging: I also used it to dig a few small holes for planting some new flowers. It made quick work of the soil, even in the tougher, clay-like areas.
  • Dividing Perennials: I even tried it out for dividing some overgrown perennials. The pointed blade helped me get right in there and separate the roots cleanly.

My Verdict

Honestly, I’m loving this thing. It’s so much more versatile than a regular trowel. It’s become my go-to tool for pretty much everything in the garden. It’s tough, efficient, and kind of fun to use. If you’re a gardening geek like me, I highly recommend getting yourself a Japanese gardening shovel. You won’t regret it!
