Okay, so I’ve been seeing these Flowerpot portable lamps everywhere lately, and I finally caved and decided to try making one myself. I mean, they look super cute, right? And I’m all about adding a little cozy vibe to my apartment.
First things first, I had to figure out what I even needed.

- Some kind of base. I thought about using an actual flowerpot, but then I remembered I had this old, plain ceramic bowl that would work perfectly.
- Something for the lampshade. A smaller bowl seemed like the obvious choice. I found one at a thrift store that had a nice, rounded shape.
- A light source. I went with a simple, battery-powered puck light because I didn’t want to mess with any wiring.
- Spray paint. Because everything looks better with a fresh coat of paint, am I right? I picked a matte terracotta color.
- Some strong glue. I went with super glue.
The Making process
Step one: Prep the bowls. I cleaned both bowls really well. I mean, really well. The thrift store bowl had some weird sticky residue, so I had to scrub it for a bit.
Step two: Paint! I took the bowls outside (important for ventilation!) and gave them a few coats of spray paint. I made sure to let each coat dry completely before adding the next. Gotta be patient! The color was deeper than I thought.
Step three: Assemble the light. I popped the batteries into the puck light and tested it out. Worked like a charm! These little lights are surprisingly bright.
Step four: Glue time! I carefully applied a ring of glue to the bottom rim of the smaller bowl (the lampshade).I had to get the top rim to stick, that’s where it all went wrong.
Step five: Put it all together. I put my bowl on the workbench, and stuck the light in. On top of that I placed the smaller bowl upside down. And there it is,my very own Flowerpot Lamp.
It actually turned out pretty well! It’s not perfect, of course – there are a few little imperfections in the paint, but I kinda like that. It gives it a more handmade, rustic feel. And it gives off the perfect amount of warm, cozy light. Success!
