Okay, so the other day I got it into my head that I wanted to try and 3D model the Verner Panton Flowerpot lamp. You know, that iconic, super cool mid-century modern one? I’ve always loved the design, so I figured, why not give it a shot?
First things first, I gathered a ton of reference images. I scoured the internet for pictures from every angle – front, back, side, you name it. I even found some detailed dimension drawings, which were super helpful.

Then, I fired up my trusty 3D modeling software.I’m use Blender. It took me some time to choose a good one, but the tutorial told me this is the most popular one. I’m still a beginner, so I started with the basic shapes. The Flowerpot is basically two hemispheres, right? So I created those first, playing around with the sizes until they looked about right compared to my references.
The trickiest part was definitely getting the proportions just right. I spent ages tweaking and adjusting, moving things around by tiny increments. I kept comparing my model to the reference images, making sure the curves matched up and the overall silhouette looked accurate.
- Created basic hemisphere shapes.
- Adjusted sizes and proportions.
- Focused on matching curves to reference images.
Once I was happy with the main shapes, I started working on the smaller details. I added the little stem that connects the two hemispheres and the curved piece at the top that holds the lightbulb. Those were relatively easy, just more cylinders and spheres that I shaped and positioned.
Then came the coloring, which is import for a better display! I picked some classic Flowerpot colors,I use the RGB code to make the color accurate.
The Final Result
It’s not perfect, of course. There are definitely some things I’d tweak if I were to do it again. But overall, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out! It was a fun little project, and I learned a lot in the process. It’s so satisfying to take something you see in the real world and recreate it in 3D. Now I’ve got my own little virtual Verner Panton Flowerpot!
