Self Watering Window Box Planters: Say Goodbye to Daily Watering Hassles!

Okay, so I’ve been wanting to add some greenery to my window sills, but I’m, like, the worst at remembering to water plants. Seriously, they usually end up looking like dried-up, sad little things. So, I decided to try out these self-watering window box planters. I figured, worst case, they’d at least delay the inevitable plant-death, right?

Getting Started

First, I grabbed a couple of window boxes. Make sure the window boxes are long and deep enough. Then I measured my window sill to make sure they’d actually fit. You know, basic stuff. I also picked up some potting mix – the kind that’s good for containers, not the heavy garden soil. And, of course, I needed some plants! I went with some colorful petunias and some trailing ivy, hoping they’d look nice spilling over the edges.

Setting It Up

The “self-watering” part is actually pretty simple. It is a reservior on the bottom, which you fill with water by tube. These window box already had a hole with a tube for watering.

  • I added a layer with potting mix first.
  • Then, I arranged the plants how I wanted them, making sure to give them enough space to grow. I gently loosened the roots a bit before putting them in.
  • I carefully fill the soil and make sure the plants stay in the right place.
  • I filled up the reservoir with water until I could see it.

The Waiting Game (and Watering)

Honestly, the hardest part was waiting to see if it actually worked. I checked the water level in the reservoir every few days. It’s pretty cool – you can see the water level, I refilled it when it got low.

The Result!

It’s been a few weeks now, and I gotta say, I’m impressed! The plants are actually thriving! They’re blooming like crazy, and the ivy is starting to trail down just like I wanted. I haven’t had to do any extra watering beyond refilling the reservoir, which is, like, a miracle for me. I can say, that I’m no longer a plant killer, and even I can have plants now!

So, yeah, if you’re like me and struggle with keeping plants alive, these self-watering window boxes are definitely worth a try. They’re pretty easy to set up, and they really do take the guesswork out of watering. My window sill looks amazing, and I didn’t even have to become a plant expert to do it!
