Repotting Lucky Bamboo (Care Guide and Water vs. Soil advice)

Okay, so my bamboo plant was looking super cramped in its old pot. You know, the leaves were kinda drooping, and it just didn’t seem happy. I figured it was time for a bigger home, so I decided to repot it. I’ve never done this before, I’m not that much experience, but hey, how hard could it be, right?

Gathering My Supplies

First things first, I needed to get my stuff together. I went and grabbed:

Repotting Lucky Bamboo (Care Guide and Water vs. Soil advice)
  • A new pot – I chose one that was about 2 inches wider in diameter than the old one. Made sure that has some drainage holes!
  • Some fresh potting mix – I just picked up a regular bag from the garden center, nothing that I’m familiar with.
  • A pair of gloves – didn’t want to get my hands all dirty.
  • A small trowel – to help with the digging and scooping.
  • Some water.

Getting the Bamboo Out

This was the part I was most nervous about. I gently tapped the sides of the old pot to loosen the soil. Then, holding the base of the bamboo stalks, I carefully tugged it out. It was surprisingly root-bound! The roots were all tangled and circling the bottom of the pot. Poor thing!

Prepping the New Pot

I put a layer of the new potting mix at the bottom of the new pot. Just enough so that the bamboo would sit at the right height – you want the top of the root ball to be about an inch below the rim of the pot.

Planting the Bamboo

I carefully placed the bamboo in the new pot, making sure it was centered. Then, I started filling in around the roots with more potting mix. I used my fingers to gently pack the soil down, but not too tight – you want the roots to be able to breathe, so don’t make too tight.

Watering and Finishing Up

Once the pot was full of soil, I gave the bamboo a good watering. I kept watering until I saw water draining out of the bottom holes. Finally, clean up the soil that was all over the floor.

And that’s it! My bamboo’s got a new home. It already looks a bit perkier, I guess it’s happy with all that extra space. Hopefully, it’ll thrive in its new pot. Fingers crossed!
