Okay, so my pothos was looking a little sad, not terrible, just…blah. The leaves weren’t as vibrant, and it wasn’t putting out new growth like it used to. I figured it was probably time to give it a little boost with some fertilizer.

First, I gathered my supplies. I already had some liquid fertilizer that I use for my other houseplants. It’s just a general-purpose, balanced one, nothing fancy. You’ll also need a watering can or a container, and of course, water!

Figure the mixing

I checked the instructions on the fertilizer bottle. I really can’t stress this enough. Different fertilizers have different strengths, and you REALLY don’t want to overdo it. The general rule is, less is more. My fertilizer recommended a certain amount per gallon of water, I diluted it to about half strength. I figured it’s better to be cautious, it’s a plant, not human!

  • Used a measuring cup and get some water
  • Mixed fertilizer into water
  • Stirred it all up.

Then, it was time to water my pothos. I usually water it until I see water coming out of the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot. That way, I know the soil is thoroughly moistened. I use the same method with fertilizing, just pour the fertilizer to the soil until it coming out of the bottom.

Observe

After that, I just, you know, keep an eye on it. There will be few weeks, it put out some brand-new leaves, and the existing ones perked up and looked much healthier and greener. Success!

I usually fertilize every 2-3 waterings during the growing season (spring and summer). During the winter, I can cut to very few times because the plant’s growth slows down.

Hope this helps anyone, good luck with your pothos!
