Okay, so my friend Sarah just bought her first house! Super exciting, right? And of course, I wanted to get her a housewarming gift. But I didn’t want to get her just anything. I wanted something that would last and, you know, actually be useful. That’s when I thought: plants!
So, first, I brainstormed a bit. I needed to figure out what kind of plants would even work for Sarah. She’s not exactly a green thumb, so I knew I needed something low-maintenance. I also wanted to consider the size of her new place. It’s not huge, so nothing that would take over, obviously.

I hit up my local nursery – way better than those big box stores, trust me. I wandered around for a good half hour, just checking out the different options. I spoke with one of the employees, Maria, she was super helpful. I explained Sarah’s situation – new homeowner, not a plant expert – and Maria immediately pointed me towards some great choices.
The Contenders
- Snake Plant: Maria said these are practically indestructible. Perfect! They don’t need a lot of light or water.
- ZZ Plant: Another super easy one. Apparently, you can almost forget to water it, and it’ll still be fine.
- Pothos: These are pretty, with trailing vines. Maria showed me how to easily propagate them, so Sarah could basically get “free plants” later on!
- Succulents: A classic choice. There were so many cute little ones!
I spent a good 15 minutes just debating between the snake plant and the ZZ plant. They both seemed equally foolproof. Finally, I decided to go with a combination! I picked out a small, healthy-looking snake plant and a slightly larger ZZ plant. Then, I grabbed a couple of cute, simple pots that I thought would match Sarah’s style. Nothing too fancy, just clean and modern.
I also added a small bag of potting mix, just in case Sarah needed to repot them later. And, because I’m extra, I threw in a little watering can – a cute, practical one, of course. It was plastic with watering instructions on it.
I took everything home, feeling pretty good about my choices. At home I arranged them in separate paper bags with some tissue paper to make it look nice. I even printed out little care instruction cards for each plant, just in case.
When I gave Sarah the plants, she loved them! She was especially relieved that they weren’t high-maintenance. Success! I’m pretty sure these plants will be thriving in her new home for years to come. I’m so happy that I managed to find such practical and good looking housewarming gifts.
