Is Fertilizing Plants in Winter Necessary? Get the Facts Here!

Okay, so winter’s coming, and I’ve been thinking a lot about my plants. I mean, they’re all tucked in for the cold season, but should I still be fertilizing them? I did some digging and decided to try a little experiment with a few of my houseplants.

Figuring Out Which Plants to Feed

First, I checked which of my plants actually grow during winter. Turns out, some of them, like my snake plant and ZZ plant, basically go to sleep. No point in feeding them, right? But others, like my African violets and Christmas cactus, they’re still pushing out new growth. Those are the ones I decided to focus on.

Choosing the Right Fertilizer

Next up, I needed to find the right food. I usually use a balanced, all-purpose liquid fertilizer during the growing season, but I figured something milder would be better for winter. I found a fertilizer specifically designed for houseplants with a lower NPK ratio (that’s the nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium – the main nutrients). It was something like a 2-1-2, instead of my usual 10-10-10.

The Dilution Experiment

Here’s where I got a little cautious. I definitely didn’t want to overfeed them. So, I decided to dilute the fertilizer even more than the instructions said. I usually mix one capful per gallon of water, but this time, I used only half a capful per gallon. I figured it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Watering and Feeding Time

I waited until my plants actually needed watering. I stuck my finger in the soil to make sure it was dry about an inch down. Then, I watered them with my diluted fertilizer mix. I made sure to give them a good soaking until water started draining out of the bottom.

Observing and Tweaking

  • Week 1: Noticed a little bit of new growth on my African violet. No signs of burning or stress.
  • Week 2: My Christmas cactus started forming tiny buds! Looking good so far.
  • Week 3: Still seeing slow but steady growth. No problems. Decided to continue with the diluted feeding every other watering.
  • Week 4: Everything’s still looking healthy. No yellowing leaves or anything like that. I’m pretty happy with the results!

I skipped the fertilizer mix every other watering and gave plain water. I kept a close eye on things, ready to adjust if my plants showed any signs of stress.

The Takeaway

So, my little winter fertilizing experiment seems to be working! The key, I think, is to use a weaker fertilizer solution and only feed the plants that are actively growing. It’s all about paying attention to what your plants are telling you and adjusting your care accordingly. I’ll keep monitoring them throughout the winter, but for now, it looks like a diluted feeding schedule is the way to go!
