Okay, so I’ve been seeing these Flowerpot lamps everywhere lately. You know, the Verner Panton ones? They’re super retro and cool, and I decided I had to have one. But, man, those things are expensive! So, naturally, I figured I’d try to make one myself. How hard could it be, right?

The Hunt for Parts

First things first, I needed to find something that could work as the two half-sphere shapes. I hit up a bunch of thrift stores, looking for anything round and the right size. I considered using bowls, like, seriously considered it. Salad bowls, mixing bowls, anything!

I even looked at those plastic globes you put on outdoor lights. Eventually, After a couple days searching, I found these. These were perfect! And I will make them become what I want.

Getting Down to Business

  • Prepping the materials: I scrubbed everything clean. I took the lamp kit apart, and use electric drill to make holes for the cable to get through.
  • The Messy Part: Spray painting! My hands were covered. My makeshift “spray booth” (aka a cardboard box) was a disaster. But hey, it got the job done. I went with a bright orange, because, why not? It’s supposed to be fun and funky!
  • Putting It All Together: Once everything was dry (which felt like it took forever), I started assembling. I carefully connected the wires, making sure I didn’t shock myself (always a plus!).

The Moment of Truth

I plugged it in, held my breath, and… it worked! I actually made a Flowerpot lamp! It’s not perfect, mind you. There are a few little imperfections in the paint, and it’s maybe a tiny bit wobbly. But honestly, I love it. It’s got character! And it cost me way, way less than buying a real one.

It might not be a perfect Verner Panton, but it’s my Verner Panton-ish, Flowerpot-inspired lamp, and I’m pretty darn proud of it. Now, what should my next DIY project be…?
