Okay, so I’ve been wanting to give my ponytail palm a bit of a lift, literally. It’s been sitting on the floor, and I just felt like it needed a bit more…presence. So, I decided to build a simple plant stand for it. I’m no woodworking expert, but I figured, how hard could it be?
Gathering Supplies
First things first, I needed some wood. I went to the local hardware store and rummaged through their scrap wood section – way cheaper than buying full-length boards. I found some decent-looking pieces that I thought would work. I also grabbed some wood screws, wood glue, sandpaper, and a can of stain I had lying around from a previous project.
Cutting and Sanding
Back home, I measured my pot’s diameter at the base to get an idea of how big the top of the stand needed to be. Then, I cut the wood pieces to size. I’m keeping it simple, just a square top and four legs. I used a handsaw because, well, that’s all I have. Nothing fancy. I did my best to make the cuts straight, but it’s not perfectly. After cutting, I sanded all the edges and surfaces to get rid of any splinters and make everything smooth.
Putting it Together
Now for the assembly. I applied wood glue to the edges where the legs would attach to the top. Then, I used the wood screws to secure everything together. I pre-drilled some small holes to make screwing easier and prevent the wood from splitting. It wobbled a little at first, so I adjusted the leg a few times until got it fairly stable. I used some extra wood blocks to put between legs and top plate to make sure that it is strong enough to support the big pot and plant.
The Finishing Touches
Once the glue dried, I gave the whole stand a final sanding. Then, I applied the stain. It’s a dark walnut color, which I think will look nice with the green of the ponytail palm. I just brushed it on, waited a bit, and then wiped off the excess with a rag.
The Final Result
After the stain dried, my ponytail palm finally had its new home! It’s not perfect, a little wobbly, maybe, but it’s sturdy enough, and it definitely gives my plant the lift I was going for. It looks way better than it did sitting on the floor. Plus, I made it myself, which is always a good feeling.
It’s a simple project that anyone can do. And now, I can have a better view of my ponytail palm.
