Hey everyone, it’s your boy back again with another home project update. This time, it’s about something weird that popped up in one of my plant pots. I’m talking about this yellow, kind of fluffy stuff – looked like a mushroom, but not quite like any I’d seen before. It’s called “flowerpot fungus,” as I found out. So, let me tell you about this little adventure I had with it.
It all started a few weeks ago. I was watering my plants like I always do, and I noticed this bright yellow thing in the soil of my peace lily. At first, I thought it was just some weird mold or something. But it kept getting bigger and fluffier, so I got a bit curious – and maybe a little worried.

I snapped a few pictures and did what any modern person would do – I went on the internet. I typed in something like “yellow fluffy thing in plant pot” and started scrolling through images. Finally, I found something that looked just like my uninvited guest.
Turns out, it’s a type of fungus called Leucocoprinus birnbaumii, but most people just call it “flowerpot fungus” or “plantpot dapperling.” It’s pretty common in potted plants and greenhouses. Apparently, it loves warm, humid places and eats dead stuff in the soil.
What I Did About It
-
First, I didn’t panic. From what I read, it’s not really harmful to the plant. It’s more of an eyesore than anything else.
-
Then, I tried to just scoop it out. I used a spoon and carefully removed the yellow parts and some of the soil around it. I tossed that straight into the trash outside – didn’t want it spreading to my other plants.
-
I also thought about the soil. Maybe it was too moist or had too much old stuff for the fungus to munch on. So, I decided to let the soil dry out a bit more between waterings. And I made sure to remove any dead leaves or anything like that.
-
Some folks online suggested using fungicides, but I wasn’t too keen on that. I don’t like using chemicals in my plants unless I absolutely have to. Plus, it seemed like overkill for something that wasn’t really hurting my plant.
After a couple of weeks, the yellow stuff didn’t come back. I kept an eye on it and stuck to my new watering routine, and so far, so good. My peace lily seems happy, and there’s no sign of the flowerpot fungus anymore.

So, that’s my little story about the yellow fluffy intruder. It was a bit of a surprise, but it turned out to be a good learning experience. Now I know what to look out for, and I’m a bit more careful about keeping my plant pots healthy. Hope this helps anyone who might find themselves in a similar situation! Keep your plants happy, folks!
