Why You Should Prune Your Scotch Broom Plant | Benefits and Easy Pruning Methods
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Okay, so yesterday I finally got around to pruning my Scotch broom plant. It was getting a bit out of control, so it was definitely time.

First off, I put on my gardening gloves – gotta protect those hands, you know? Then, I grabbed my pruning shears. They’re a bit rusty, but they still do the job. I made sure to find a good pair of eye protection, too. Those branches can really snap back sometimes.

Why You Should Prune Your Scotch Broom Plant | Benefits and Easy Pruning Methods

I started by just looking at the whole plant. It’s huge! I decided to tackle the biggest, thickest branches first. I cut them back pretty far, almost to the ground. There were a lot of dead branches, too, so those were easy to just snap off. I just found the place where they connected to the main stem and gave them a good snip.

  • Cut back the biggest branches.
  • Snapped off the dead branches.
  • Made sure each cut was clean.

The whole process took a couple of hours, I’m not gonna lie. I was sweating by the end of it! There were a few branches that were really hard to reach. I even had to use a small step ladder for those ones! I took my time on each branch, making sure to get a clean cut. That way the plant can heal better.

The aftermath

After I was done, I gathered all the branches I’d cut off and tossed them into a big pile. It’s surprising how much you end up with! My backyard looked like a warzone with all of those branches!

The Scotch broom looks so much better now. It’s not all overgrown and messy anymore. Plus, I think it’ll be healthier this way. I’m no expert, but I think pruning is important for these plants. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, even though it was a lot of work. Maybe next year I’ll remember to do it a bit sooner, so it doesn’t get so crazy!

The last thing I did was clean up my tools. I wiped down the shears and put everything back in the shed. Now I’m just hoping I didn’t overdo it. Fingers crossed the plant doesn’t die on me! I am feeling good about it, and it sure looks much better now. All in all, a good day’s work I think!
