DIY St Augustine Lawn Fertilizer: Can You Make Your Own? (Save Money and Feed Your Lawn Naturally)

Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to get my lawn in tip-top shape, and I heard a lot about St. Augustine grass. I decided to give it a shot and, of course, I needed to figure out the whole fertilizer thing. Here’s how it went down.

Figuring Out the Basics

First thing I did was some digging around to understand what St. Augustine grass actually needs. Turns out, it’s a bit of a hungry type – loves its nitrogen. But, it’s also important not to go overboard because that can cause problems too.

Choosing the Right Fertilizer

I went to the local garden store, and man, was it overwhelming! So many options. I ended up asking for help – no shame in that, right? The guy there pointed me towards fertilizers specifically made for St. Augustine grass. I learned that the numbers on the bag (like 16-4-8) tell you the ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. For my lawn, I needed something with a higher first number (nitrogen).

Prepping the Lawn

Before I even thought about spreading the fertilizer, I gave my lawn a good mow. I made sure not to cut it too short, though, because St. Augustine grass likes to be a bit taller. I also watered the lawn a couple of days before to make sure the soil was ready to take in the fertilizer.

Applying the Fertilizer

I got myself one of those spreader things – it’s like a little cart with a hopper that you push around. I filled it up with the fertilizer I chose and started walking. I tried to be methodical, going back and forth in even rows to make sure I didn’t miss any spots or put too much in one area. It was kind of like mowing the lawn, but with a different machine.

Watering It In

After spreading the fertilizer, I watered the lawn again. I read that this helps the fertilizer get down into the soil where the roots can get to it. I didn’t want to flood the lawn, just a nice, even watering to soak it all in.

Waiting and Watching

Now comes the waiting game. It took a few weeks, but I definitely started seeing a difference. My lawn started looking greener and fuller. I made sure to keep up with regular watering, especially since it’s been pretty hot and dry.

Keeping Up the Good Work

  • Regular Feeding: I learned that fertilizing isn’t a one-time thing. It’s like feeding a pet – you gotta keep doing it regularly. I set a reminder on my phone to fertilize again in a couple of months.
  • Watching for Problems: I’ve been keeping an eye out for any signs of trouble, like yellowing or thinning. So far, so good, but I know that things can change, and I need to be ready to adjust if necessary.
  • Enjoying the Results: Honestly, the best part is just being able to enjoy my nice, green lawn. It’s a great feeling to see the results of your hard work, and it makes the whole process feel worthwhile.

So, that’s my St. Augustine fertilizer story. It’s been a bit of a learning curve, but I’m pretty happy with how things are turning out. If you’re thinking about trying it out, I say go for it! Just do your research, pick the right fertilizer, and be patient. Happy gardening!
