Japanese Gardening Tools: Tips on How to Choose and Use Them
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Alright, alright, let’s talk about them Japanese gardening tools, yeah? I ain’t no fancy gardener, but I know a thing or two about gettin’ your hands dirty. My old man, he always said, ya gotta have the right tool for the job, or you’ll just be messin’ around.

First off, there’s this…uh…thingy called a Hori-Hori knife. Sounds fancy, huh? Well, it’s basically a knife, but a good one. They say it’s for diggin’ up roots and stuff, like them fancy mountain vegetables those city folks like. It’s got a pointy end and a saw-like edge, so you can cut through roots and stems, even them woody ones. And get this, some of ’em come with a sharpener thingy, a diamond one! Makes it real easy to keep it sharp, I guess.

  • Hori-Hori Knife: Diggin’ and cuttin’, real handy.
  • Nejiri Gama Hoe: For weeds and stuff, gets the job done.

Then there’s another tool, a Nejiri Gama hoe. Now, that’s a hoe, but not like the big ones you use in the fields. This one’s small, for your hand. Good for gettin’ rid of weeds, they say. You gotta scrape it along the ground, and it pulls them weeds right out. My neighbor, Mrs. Gable, she uses one of these all the time in her little flower patch. Says it’s the best thing since sliced bread, whatever that means.

You know, gardenin’ ain’t just about diggin’ and plantin’. You gotta take care of your plants, too. Sometimes you gotta prune ’em, cut off the dead branches so the plant can grow strong. But don’t go usin’ a sickle for that, you hear? A sickle’s for cuttin’ grass and weeds, not for prunin’. You’ll just mess up the plant. Use the right tool, that’s what I always say.

My grandpappy used to say, “A good tool is like a good friend, it’ll always be there for ya.” And he was right. If you take care of your tools, they’ll take care of you. Keep ’em clean, keep ’em sharp, and they’ll last you a lifetime. Don’t just throw ’em in the shed and forget about ’em. Treat ’em right, and they’ll help you grow the best darn garden you ever seen.

I remember one time, my grandson, he tried to use my Hori-Hori knife to open a can of beans. Can you believe that? A can of beans! I told him, “Boy, that ain’t what that’s for! You’ll ruin it!” He didn’t listen, of course. Kids these days, they don’t listen to nothin’. Ended up bendin’ the tip. Took me half a day to fix it. But that’s the thing, you gotta use the right tool for the job. And you gotta respect your tools. They ain’t toys, they’re helpers.

So, if you’re thinkin’ about gettin’ into gardenin’, or maybe you just want to upgrade your tools, check out them Japanese ones. They might sound fancy, but they’re good tools, strong and reliable. Just remember what I said, use the right tool for the job, and take care of ’em, and they’ll take care of you.

Choosing the Right Tool: It all comes down to what you’re doin’. Diggin’? Hori-Hori. Weedin’? Nejiri Gama. Prunin’? Get yourself some pruners, not a sickle! It ain’t rocket science, just common sense. And if you ain’t sure, ask somebody who knows. Don’t just guess, or you’ll end up with a bent knife and a whole lotta weeds.

And another thing, don’t go buyin’ the cheapest thing you can find. You get what you pay for, that’s what my old man used to say. Spend a little extra, get a good quality tool, and it’ll last you a long time. It’ll be worth it in the long run, trust me on that. I’ve been gardenin’ for longer than you’ve been alive, and I’ve learned a thing or two about what works and what don’t.

So, there you have it. A little bit of wisdom about Japanese gardening tools from an old woman who’s spent a lifetime in the dirt. Now get out there and grow somethin’!
