Ficus Plant Repotting: When and How? (Give Your Ficus the Best Care)

Okay, here’s my experience repotting my ficus plant:

So, I noticed my ficus was looking a little sad, kind of cramped in its old pot. The roots were all bunched up, pretty much circling the bottom – a sure sign it was time for a change, time to repot. I think it was late winter, maybe early spring, which I heard was a good time for this kind of thing.

Ficus Plant Repotting: When and How? (Give Your Ficus the Best Care)

First, I gathered my stuff. A new pot, just a bit bigger than the old one, some fresh potting soil, and my trusty gardening gloves. I don’t know what I’d do without those gloves. I also laid down some old newspaper on the ground to keep things clean. You know how messy these things can get.

Getting the ficus out of its old pot was a bit of a struggle. I gently tapped around the edges and gave it a little wiggle, then, finally, it came loose. Phew! Looked at those roots, all tangled up. I carefully teased them apart, trying not to break too many. Then, I took a pair of scissors and snipped off any roots that were looking dead or mushy. They were pretty obvious.

Next, I put a layer of fresh soil in the new pot, placed the ficus on top, and then filled in around it with more soil. I made sure the plant was sitting at the same level it was in the old pot, not too deep, not too shallow. Just right. I gave the soil a good pat down to get rid of any air pockets.

Finally, I watered the plant thoroughly, letting the water drain out the bottom. You could almost hear it sighing in relief. I put the ficus back in its usual spot, where it gets plenty of indirect sunlight, and kept an eye on it for the next few weeks.

It’s been a while now, and my ficus is doing great! It’s grown a bunch of new leaves and looks so much happier in its new home. I think I did a good job. Maybe you should try to repot your plant, too.

  • Gather your supplies.
  • Remove the plant carefully.
  • Prune the roots.
  • Repot in fresh soil.
  • Water thoroughly.

Follow these steps, and you should have success, too.

Keeping The Plant Healthy

I always make sure to keep a consistent watering schedule, and I rotate the pot every now and then so all sides of the plant get some light. I do not know how to express that in professional terms, but these are my honest words. If you are not sure about any steps, just try and see. This is how I did it, and it has worked fine for me for a while. I hope it helps you too.
