Okay, here is my sharing about the flowers for zone 4.
So, I decided to plant some flowers in my yard. But I live in a place that gets seriously cold in the winter, like -30 degrees Fahrenheit cold. Yeah, it’s brutal. So I had to do some digging to find flowers that could handle that kind of chill.
First, I learned that my area is called “USDA Hardiness Zone 4.” Whatever, all that matters is that it gets cold, right? Anyway, I found out that there are actually a bunch of flowers that can survive in this zone.
I started by making a list. I wrote down names like “Petunias” I also saw some people were saying that Grandiflora, Multiflora, and Milliflora are good ones. Sounds fancy, right?

- Arctic Kiwi Vine(Actinidia Arguta)
Then, I also came across this thing called an “Arctic Kiwi Vine.” It sounds weird, but it’s a perennial, I also wrote down its scientific name – Actinidia Arguta, which means it comes back every year. I figured that would be a good one to try, since I wouldn’t have to replant it all the time. Lazy, I know, but hey, it gets cold out there!
Planting Time
Next, I went to the local garden store. I grabbed some petunia seeds and one of those kiwi vines. When I got home, I dug some holes in my garden bed. I followed the instructions on the seed packet for the petunias. They seem easy enough.
For the kiwi, I dug a bigger hole and carefully placed it in, then filled it back up with soil. I watered everything really well and just waited.
Waiting Game
It took a few weeks, but finally, I saw little green shoots popping up! The petunias started to bloom first. They were all sorts of colors, super pretty. The kiwi vine took longer to grow, but it eventually started to climb up the trellis I put next to it.
Winter is Coming
When winter rolled around, I was a little nervous. I didn’t know if my plants would make it. But guess what? They did! The petunias died back, which I expected, but the kiwi vine stayed green even under the snow. When spring came back, both kinds of flowers bounced right back. My garden looked awesome. So, even if you live in a super cold place, you can still have pretty flowers. You just gotta pick the right ones.
