Snake Plant Temperature Tolerance: How Low Can They Go?

Okay, here is my blog post about snake plant temperature tolerance, based on my personal experiences.

I’ve been growing snake plants for a few years now, and they are one of my favorite houseplants because they’re just so darn easy to take care of. But I recently got curious about their temperature limits. I mean, I know they’re tough, but just how tough?

Snake Plant Temperature Tolerance: How Low Can They Go?

So I started to do some digging online. Some websites said snake plants can tolerate as low as 50F (10C), while others said they need at least 60F (15C). That’s a pretty big difference! To get to the bottom of this, I decided to run a little experiment myself.

My Experiment Setup

I have three snake plants, all roughly the same size and health. I kept one indoors as a control (my house stays around 70F/21C). I moved one to my unheated garage, and the third I put it outside.

  • Control Plant: Kept indoors at a constant 70F (21C).
  • Garage Plant: Temperatures fluctuated between 50F and 60F (10-15C).
  • Outdoor Plant: This poor guy experienced temperatures as low as 45F (7C) at night.

The Results

I monitored the plants for a few weeks, checking the temperature and keeping an eye on their leaves. Here’s what happened:

  • Control Plant: This one continued to thrive. No surprise there.
  • Garage Plant: This plant seemed to be doing fine at first, but after a couple of weeks, I noticed the leaves were starting to look a little droopy. They also lost some of their vibrant green color.
  • Outdoor Plant: This one definitely struggled. The leaves started to turn yellow and mushy pretty quickly. It was clear that 45F (7C) was just too cold for it.

My Conclusion

Based on my little experiment, I’d say that snake plants can tolerate temperatures down to about 50F (10C), but they really don’t like it. They’ll probably survive, but they won’t be happy. Once I moved my outdoor plant into the garage, it started to recover. I have moved it inside with the other indoor plant now, and it’s beginning to look better.

The ideal temperature range for snake plants seems to be between 70F and 90F (21-32C). They like it warm! They prefer a relatively low to moderate humidity level, and they seem to grow faster with consistent temperatures. If you keep your snake plants in that range, they should do great.

So, if you’re wondering how cold is too cold for your snake plant, I’d say try to keep it above 50F (10C) if you want it to be truly happy. If you’re growing it indoors, you should be fine. Just don’t put it near any drafty windows or doors in the winter!

This was a fun little experiment, and I learned a lot about what my snake plants can handle. Hope you found this helpful!
