So, I got this idea the other day. I wanna make a tool, something really simple, like a tiny shovel. Yeah, you heard that right, a tiny shovel. I mean, who needs a tiny shovel, right? But hey, I thought it would be a fun little project to kill some time and maybe learn a thing or two. Plus, I had some scrap metal lying around, so why not put it to good use?
First things first, I needed a plan. I grabbed a piece of paper and sketched out a rough design. Nothing fancy, just a basic shovel shape, but small. I figured I’d start with the blade, so I grabbed that piece of scrap metal and got to work. I used a marker to trace the shape onto the metal and then clamped it down to my workbench. Safety first, you know? Always gotta wear those safety glasses.

Next, I fired up my angle grinder. Man, I love that tool. It makes cutting through metal feel like slicing butter. I carefully followed the lines I had drawn, and in no time, I had a tiny shovel blade. It was a bit rough around the edges, so I spent some time smoothing it out with a file and some sandpaper. I even gave it a quick polish, just to make it look a little nicer. I wanted it to shine, even though it’s just a tiny shovel.
Now, for the handle. I had this old wooden dowel that I thought would be perfect. I measured it out and cut it to the right length. Then, I drilled a hole into one end, just big enough to fit the tang of the shovel blade. That’s the pointy part that connects the blade to the handle, in case you’re wondering.
I applied some wood glue to the tang and the inside of the hole, then carefully inserted the blade into the handle. I made sure it was nice and snug. To make it even more secure, I added a small metal pin through the handle and the tang. It’s like a tiny belt and suspenders, haha! I let it dry overnight, just to be sure the glue had set properly.
The next day, I gave the handle a good sanding to make it smooth and comfortable to hold. I even added a few coats of varnish, just to give it some protection and a nice, glossy finish. It’s all about the details, you know? Even for a tiny shovel.
And there you have it, folks, my very own tiny shovel! It is not really useful for anything practical, but it was sure fun to make. I gotta say, it turned out even better than I expected. It’s kind of cute, in a rugged, miniature way. I might just keep it on my desk as a conversation starter. Or maybe I’ll find some tiny plants that need a tiny bit of digging. Who knows?
This whole process got me thinking about how satisfying it is to create something with your own hands. Even if it’s just a silly little thing like a tiny shovel. It’s a good reminder that we can all make something, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. You just gotta have an idea, some basic tools, and a little bit of patience. So, the next time you have some free time, why not try making something yourself? You might surprise yourself with what you can create.
