How to Repot a Dracaena: Step-by-Step Instructions (Keep Your Plant Happy)

Okay, so, I’ve got this dracaena plant, right? It’s been in the same pot for, like, forever, and honestly, it was starting to look a little sad. I figured it was probably time to give it a new home, you know, let it stretch its roots a bit. I’m no expert, but I’ve repotted a few plants in my time, so I thought I’d give it a go.

First things first, I needed a new pot. I went to my local garden center and started browsing. I knew I needed something bigger than the old pot, but not ridiculously huge. And I remembered somewhere that dracaenas need good drainage, so I looked for one with a bunch of holes at the bottom. Found one that looked about right, not too shallow, not too wide, just a good, solid pot.

Next up, gravel. Yeah, I know, sounds weird, but it helps with drainage. I grabbed a small bag and poured about an inch into the bottom of the new pot. Figured that should do the trick.

Then came the soil. I used just some regular potting mix, nothing fancy. I filled the pot partway with the soil, making sure to kind of pat it down a bit.

Now for the slightly tricky part – getting the dracaena out of its old pot. I gently tugged on the base of the plant, wiggling it a little. It was pretty stuck, so I used a trowel to kind of loosen the soil around the edges. Finally, with a bit of effort, it popped out! The roots were all tangled up, poor thing, definitely rootbound.

I carefully loosened the root ball a bit, trying not to break too many of the roots. Then, I placed the dracaena into its new home, right in the center. I filled in the rest of the pot with soil, making sure to get it all around the roots. I patted it down again to make sure it was nice and snug.

  • Get a new pot with good drainage holes.
  • Put some gravel at the bottom.
  • Fill the pot partway with soil.
  • Carefully remove the dracaena from the old pot.
  • Loosen the root ball.
  • Place the dracaena in the new pot and fill with soil.

The Big Finish

Finally, I gave the plant a good watering, letting the water drain out the bottom. I found a nice, sunny spot for it in my living room, and now we wait. Hopefully, this dracaena will be much happier in its new pot. It already looks a bit perkier, which is a good sign! It was a messy job, but well worth the effort. I’ll try to keep you guys posted on its progress. Fingers crossed!
