How to Move Cuttings from Water to Soil: Easy Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Okay, so I’ve been messing around with plants lately, and let me tell you, it’s been a ride. I started with some cuttings in water, just to see if I could get them to root. You know, the usual deal – snip a bit off a plant, stick it in a glass of water, and hope for the best. Well, guess what? They actually rooted! I was pretty stoked about that.

Now came the tricky part: moving these little guys from their cozy water home to some real soil. I’ve heard horror stories about cuttings dying after being moved, so I was a bit nervous. But I figured, hey, gotta try, right?

How to Move Cuttings from Water to Soil: Easy Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

First, I waited until the roots were looking pretty good. Not just tiny little nubs, but some decent-sized roots, like an inch or two long. I read somewhere online that this is important, so I made sure to be patient. I think it took about a month, maybe a bit longer, for them to get to that point.

Then, I got some small pots and some potting mix. Nothing fancy, just your regular indoor potting mix from the local store. I filled the pots up, leaving a little space at the top.

Next, I carefully took the cuttings out of the water. This was a bit nerve-wracking because the roots were all tangled up. I tried to be as gentle as possible, so I didn’t break any of those precious roots.

After that, I made a little hole in the soil with my finger and gently placed each cutting into its new home. I made sure the roots were nicely spread out and then covered them up with more soil, patting it down lightly.

Finally, I gave them a good watering. I read that you should keep the soil moist, especially at first, so the cuttings can get used to their new environment.

Here are some key steps I did:

  • Wait for good roots: Made sure the roots were at least an inch long.
  • Prepare the pots: Used small pots with regular potting mix.
  • Be gentle: Carefully removed the cuttings from the water without breaking the roots.
  • Plant them up: Made a hole in the soil, placed the cutting in, and covered the roots.
  • Water well: Kept the soil moist to help them adjust.

It’s been a few weeks now, and they’re doing great! They’re growing new leaves and looking really healthy. I’m so glad I took the plunge and moved them to soil. It was a bit of a learning curve, but totally worth it. If I can do it, anyone can! I just wanted to share my little plant adventure with you all. Happy planting!
