rocks for plants how to choose: the best types for gardening
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

I saw a post the other day about using rocks in gardens, and it got me thinking. I have this little garden patch that’s been looking a bit plain, so I thought, why not give it a shot?

First, I went to the local garden store. There were so many types of rocks! Big ones, small ones, different colors… it was a bit overwhelming, to be honest. The guy at the store told me that for gardens, it’s good to consider how you’ll be using the rocks. Like, will you be moving them around to plant new stuff or pulling out weeds from under them? That made sense. He suggested river rock, lava rock, crushed stone, or pea gravel for garden beds.

Since my garden isn’t huge, I figured smaller stones would be better. I didn’t want anything too bulky. Pea gravel or crushed granite seemed like good options. They can add some nice texture without being too much, you know?

  • I ended up choosing pea gravel because I liked the smooth, rounded look.
  • I also picked up a few bigger, flat stones to make a little pathway.

Getting the rocks home was a bit of a workout, but it was worth it. I cleared out the garden bed first, removing any weeds and old mulch. Then, I started laying down the pea gravel. It was actually kind of fun, like putting together a puzzle. I arranged the bigger stones to create a simple path through the middle. It’s not perfect, but I like how it turned out.

The pea gravel really does make the garden look nicer. It adds some contrast and makes the plants stand out more. Plus, it should help with keeping weeds down, which is always a bonus. Walking on the little path feels pretty good, too. I thought, I should consider using crushed rock for bigger patio later, it will be good for slip-resistant.

Here’s what I learned from this little project:

  • Thinking about how you’ll use the rocks in your garden is important.
  • Smaller stones like pea gravel are great for smaller gardens.
  • Laying down rocks can actually be kind of fun!

If you’re thinking about sprucing up your garden, I’d say give rocks a try. It’s a simple way to make a big difference. Plus, it’s kind of satisfying to do it yourself, you know?
