How to Care for Medium Light Plants: A Beginners Guide

So, I’ve been messing around with plants that are supposed to be cool with “medium light.” What a trip, let me tell you. I figured, hey, I’ve got some spots in my house that aren’t exactly sun-drenched, but they ain’t dark caves either. Perfect, right? Started off with an African Violet because I heard they’re kind of famous for being chill with less light.

I put it on a table that’s a few feet away from a window. Gets some decent light, but it’s not like it’s baking in the sun all day. I made sure to turn the pot every week, just a little, so it wouldn’t start leaning towards the window like it’s trying to make a run for it.

How to Care for Medium Light Plants: A Beginners Guide
  • Watering was another thing. I read somewhere that you gotta let the soil dry out a bit between waterings. Felt weird at first, not gonna lie. I’m used to just dousing my plants. But I stuck to it. Stuck my finger in the dirt and if it felt dry, then I’d water it.
  • I used room temperature water like some plant expert suggested, and I never let the water touch the leaves, because apparently, African Violets are drama queens about that.

Then, I got a bit cocky and picked up a couple of other “medium light” plants. I’m not even going to try to remember their fancy names. One had these big, glossy leaves and the other one was kind of spiky. I treated them pretty much the same as the African Violet, except I noticed the spiky one needed a bit more water.

Observation Time

I kept a close eye on them, checking for any signs that they were hating life. You know, like yellowing leaves, droopy stems, or just generally looking sad. I’d move them around a bit if they seemed unhappy. It was a lot of trial and error, to be honest. The African Violet did great from the beginning, blooming like crazy. But, the big-leafed one started getting these brown spots, so I moved it closer to the window. It seemed to like that better.

And the spiky one, oh boy, it almost kicked the bucket. Turns out, “medium light” for that plant meant a lot less light than I thought. I moved it to a shadier corner, and it perked right up.

After a few weeks, I felt like I finally got the hang of it. It’s definitely not as simple as just plopping a plant down and hoping for the best. You gotta pay attention to what they’re telling you, even if they can’t actually talk.

So, yeah, that’s my medium light plant adventure. It was a bit of a rollercoaster, but I learned a ton. And my place looks a whole lot greener now, which is pretty sweet.
