Okay, so I’ve been getting into houseplants lately. It’s like, suddenly my apartment felt so empty, you know? I figured, why not bring a little bit of the outdoors inside? But man, keeping these things alive is a whole different ball game than just sticking a cactus on your windowsill.
First, I started by grabbing some basic soil from the store, but then I read online that regular potting mix isn’t always the best. Apparently, there’s all this stuff about drainage and aeration. Who knew, right? So I did a little more digging and found out about these things:

- Peat Moss
- Vermiculite
- Perlite
- Worm Castings
They sound fancy, but basically, they help the soil hold onto water and nutrients, and also let the roots breathe. I mixed some of that into my regular potting mix, kinda like making a special recipe for my plants.
Then there’s the whole watering thing. I used to just dump water in whenever I remembered, but that’s apparently a big no-no. You gotta check the soil first, see if it’s dry. I got this little hand fork thing, it’s not anything heavy-duty, just something to loosen up the soil a bit and poke around.
Boosting Humidity
Oh, and humidity! My apartment’s pretty dry, especially in the winter with the heater on. I learned this trick where you put the plants on a tray with pebbles and water. The pebbles keep the pots from sitting directly in the water, so the roots don’t get soggy, but the water still evaporates and makes the air around the plants a bit more humid. I tried it out, and it seems to be working!
It’s been a learning curve, for sure. But it’s actually pretty cool watching these little guys grow and knowing that I’m kind of responsible for them. I’m no expert yet, but I’m definitely getting better at this whole houseplant thing.
