Today, I started a little experiment with indoor plants. I’ve always loved having a bit of green around the house, but figuring out the right light for them can be tricky. So, I decided to dive deep into this and see what works best.
First, I picked out a few different types of plants. I got some that are supposed to be okay with low light, like a snake plant, and others that need more light, like a few succulents I had lying around. My goal was to see how they would each do under different lighting conditions in my house.

I set up three areas. One was near a big window where there was a lot of indirect sunlight. This spot was pretty bright most of the day. Another area was a bit further away from the windows, where the light was softer and more diffused. And the last spot was in a corner that didn’t get much light at all—this was my low-light test zone.
Then, I got to work observing them. I watered them as needed and made sure to rotate the ones in the bright area, so they didn’t get too much direct sun. For the plants in the darker corner, I watched closely to see if they were stretching toward the light, which is a sign they’re not getting enough. I’ve also learned that some plants need to be wiped regularly, like the snake plant, to keep their leaves shiny.
I thought about using artificial lights, especially for the darker areas. I read that LED lights are great because they can provide a full spectrum of light, similar to natural sunlight. There’s even a tip I found about using violet-blue light to help plants grow and red light to encourage them to bloom.
- The succulents near the window thrived. They seemed to love all that light and really started to grow quickly.
- The snake plant did pretty well in the medium-light area. It didn’t grow as fast as the succulents, but it looked healthy and happy.
- The plants in the low-light corner struggled a bit. They didn’t die, but they didn’t thrive either. They definitely stretched more toward the light, and their growth was slower.
Here’s what I observed:
This little project taught me a lot about paying attention to what each plant needs. It’s not just about watering them; light is super important, too. I’m thinking of adding some LED lights to help out the plants in the darker spots. It seems like a good way to make sure they get what they need, even without much natural light. And also making sure that I don’t put any plants directly in the sun through the glass, as this can damage them.
If you’re into indoor plants, I’d say give this a try. It’s fun to see how different plants react to different conditions, and it helps you get better at taking care of them. Plus, it makes your place look nicer!
