Water Yard After Fertilizing: Get the Best Results With This Guide

Okay, so, today I wanna talk about what I did in my yard after spreading fertilizer. You know, it’s one of those things that seems simple, but there’s actually a bit to it if you want to do it right.

First off, I waited for the right time to fertilize. I made sure it was early spring, just when the grass was starting to look alive again. I’ve heard some folks do it in late spring or even late summer, and the cool-season grass guys do it in the fall. But for me, early spring felt right.

So, I got my fertilizer and spread it all over the lawn. I tried my best to get it even, ’cause I didn’t want some patches growing like crazy and others looking sad. Then came the watering part. Now, I’ve read a bunch of stuff online about this, and it seems like everyone has a different opinion.

Here’s what I did:

  • Since I used a granular fertilizer, I watered the lawn right after I finished spreading it. I set up my sprinkler and let it run for a good while. I wanted to make sure the water really soaked in and helped those little fertilizer granules dissolve and get down into the soil.
  • I made sure I didn’t overdo it, though. I didn’t want to wash away all the fertilizer I just put down. It’s a bit of a balancing act, you know?
  • I made sure to get every part of the lawn. I didn’t want any dry spots where the fertilizer wouldn’t work its magic.

Things I kept in mind

  • From what I’ve gathered, if you use a liquid fertilizer, you gotta wait until it dries first, maybe like 2-4 hours, before you water. Seems like common sense, right? Don’t want to dilute it before it gets a chance to work.
  • Also, I learned that if you’re doing weed treatments at the same time, you should wait for that to dry, too. Otherwise, the water might just wash away the weed killer, and then what’s the point?
  • I also mowed the lawn before I fertilized. Figured it would give the fertilizer more time to soak in before I mowed again. Makes sense to me.

So, that’s my little adventure in post-fertilizing lawn care. It’s not rocket science, but it does take a bit of thought and effort. Hopefully, my grass will be looking lush and green in no time! I’ll try to keep you all updated on how it goes. Maybe I’ll even share some pics if it turns out really nice. Fingers crossed!
