Long Handled Garden Shovel: How to Choose the Right One for Your Gardening Needs?

I recently started getting my garden ready for the season, and you know what? I realized I needed a new shovel. My old one was pretty beat up, and the handle was too short. It was always a pain to use, constantly bending over and hurting my back. So, I decided it was time for an upgrade.

First, I went to a few stores around town to see what they had. Man, there are so many types of shovels! Big ones, small ones, some with pointy ends, others with flat ends. It was kind of overwhelming. I picked up a few and tried to imagine myself using them. Some were too heavy, others felt flimsy. I needed something just right. I wanted a long-handled one for sure, because like I said, my back couldn’t take the short handles anymore. Then I thought, what will I be using it for most often? Well, planting trees and moving around mulch, mostly. So, I knew I needed a shovel that could handle both.

Long Handled Garden Shovel: How to Choose the Right One for Your Gardening Needs?

After checking out the stores, I decided to do a bit of browsing online. I read some articles and comments about different types of shovels and what people recommended. Some folks said a smaller blade is good for light digging, but I knew I needed something tougher. One article mentioned that the handle should reach your chest or shoulders for better leverage. That made a lot of sense! The longer the handle, the less effort you need to move dirt. I also learned that shovels are better for moving loose soil and mulch, while spades are good for digging holes in tough ground. Good to know.

I finally found a shovel that seemed perfect. It had a nice, long wooden handle that reached my chest, and the blade was sturdy and sharp. It looked like it could handle anything I threw at it. I decided to go for it. I found a good deal online, and I ordered it.

A few days later, my new shovel arrived! I was excited to try it out. I had a few trees I wanted to plant, so it was the perfect opportunity. Let me tell you, this shovel was a game changer. The long handle made a huge difference. No more aching back! I could easily dig deep holes without straining myself. It felt so much easier to move dirt and mulch around. I was able to plant those trees in no time.

Here’s what I did with my new shovel:

  • Planted some trees: The long handle made it easy to dig deep holes for the roots.
  • Moved mulch: The wide blade helped me scoop up and move a lot of mulch quickly.
  • Cleared some weeds: It was great for digging up weeds and their roots.

I’m really happy with my new long-handled garden shovel. It made my gardening tasks so much easier and more enjoyable. It is such a good tool. If you’re looking for a new shovel, I highly recommend getting one with a long handle. Your back will thank you! And make sure you consider what you’ll be using it for the most. You can find a shovel that’s right for your gardening style. Trust me, it is worth it. I am so glad that I did this.
