Alright, let’s talk about waterin’ them trees, you know, the ones with the leaves and all. Folks call it “tree bag watering,” sounds fancy, but it ain’t nothin’ complicated.
What’s this tree bag thingy anyway?

Well, it’s like a big ol’ plastic bag, you wrap it around the tree trunk, kinda like givin’ the tree a big hug. Then you fill it up with water from your hose, you know, the thing you use to wash the dirt off your boots. Simple as that.
- Slow and steady wins the race, they say. Don’t go pourin’ water all fast, the tree can’t drink it up that quick. Gotta let it soak in slow, real slow. That’s what they mean by “slow and deep,” I guess. Just like soakin’ beans overnight, gotta give it time.
- Young trees need more water, like babies need more milk. The little fellas ain’t got deep roots yet, so you gotta water ’em more often. Not too much though, you don’t wanna drown ‘em!
When and how much to water? Now that’s the real question.
Well, it ain’t the same for every tree, you see. Some trees like more water, some like less. Depends on the dirt too. If the dirt is like sand, water goes right through it, you gotta water more often. If it’s like clay, it holds water longer. You gotta figure it out, use your common sense.
I heard someone say you can use a screwdriver or somethin’ to poke the dirt and see how wet it is down there. Six inches down, they say. If it’s dry, then water it. Sounds about right.
Spring, summer, and fall, that’s when you gotta water mostly. Wintertime, trees sleep, they don’t need much water then. Kinda like us old folks, we take a nap in the winter.
What if you don’t have one of them fancy tree bags?
No worries, there’s other ways to skin a cat, as they say. You can use a soaker thingy, like a hose with little holes. It lets the water drip out slow, just like the tree likes it. They call it a bubbler too, I think.

Or you can just use a bucket, if the tree is close enough. But don’t go splashin’ water on the leaves, the tree drinks from its roots, not its leaves. And you gotta make sure the dirt stays wet, but not too wet. Too much water and the roots will rot, just like your potatoes if you leave ’em in the rain too long.
And them plastic bags with holes, they ain’t just for holdin’ water. They let the dirt breathe, so it don’t get all moldy. Mold’s bad, kills the tree, just like it kills the bread in the pantry if you leave it too long.
Some folks use sprinklers, but you gotta turn it down low, so it don’t splash on the leaves. Like I said, the tree drinks from the roots. And remember, young trees, they need more water than the old ones, just like young’uns need more attention than us old folks.
So, that’s about it. Tree bag waterin’ ain’t rocket science. Just gotta be patient, pay attention to the tree, and give it what it needs. Keep the dirt wet, but not too wet. And don’t forget, the trees need water to grow big and strong, just like us folks need food and water to keep goin’.
And one more thing, if you ain’t sure, ask someone who knows. No shame in askin’, better than killin’ your tree by doin’ it wrong. That’s all there is to it, now go on and water them trees!
